At MacDonald & Owen, we’re always looking for ways to make smart investments that improve our operations and deliver the highest quality products to our customers. As part of our strategic decision to close our Bowling Green, KY location, we have moved two state-of-the-art SII kilns, each with a 50,000 board foot capacity, to our Brookville, PA facility. Here’s why this transition supports our commitment to quality and enhances our capabilities.
Maximizing Return on Investment
A key driver behind the closure of our Bowling Green facility was the opportunity to improve our return on investment. In Kentucky, we operated five kilns totaling about 250,000 board feet, drying a mix of Poplar, Hickory, Ash, and Cherry. By relocating two newer 50,000 board foot kilns to Brookville, we can better align our drying capacity with the types of lumber our board and dimensional customer's demand.
Increasing Capacity at Brookville
With the addition of these kilns, Brookville’s total drying capacity will increase to 440,000 board feet, enabling us to dry approximately 1.2 million board feet monthly, or 14 million board feet annually. This added capacity directly supports our dimensional program in Pennsylvania, which has grown significantly in recent years.
Supporting Quality and Consistency in Production
Our best products are those we produce in-house. By expanding kiln capacity in Brookville, we’re ensuring that our dimensional product lines receive the volume and quality they need to meet demand. The facility is well-equipped to handle this increase, with both the real estate and boiler capacity necessary to support the additional kilns.
As we continue to invest in our core facilities, we remain committed to delivering quality, consistency, and innovation. These improvements not only allow us to serve our customers more effectively but also position us for sustainable growth in the years to come. Thank you for being a part of this journey with MacDonald & Owen.
