Ash
Fraxinus species, including Fraxinus americana
American Ash is highly regarded for its strength, toughness, and distinctive grain. It is commonly used for bending and turning and is widely available across the eastern U.S., growing in diverse environments that contribute to its varied characteristics.
Ash features light-colored sapwood ranging from white to yellow and heartwood that is light to dark brown. The grain is generally straight with a coarse, uniform texture, and distinct contrasts between soft summer growth and harder winter growth rings. Mineral streaks, often referred to as “glassworm,” are common and not considered defects under grading rules.
Ash machines well, with strong performance in nailing, screwing, and gluing. It takes stains and finishes easily, and its excellent shock resistance makes it ideal for hand tools and sports equipment. It is also suitable for thermal modification, commonly used for decking and garden furniture.
