Hard Maple
Acer saccharum, Acer nigrum
American Hard Maple, renowned for its creamy white sapwood and strength, is a versatile hardwood valued worldwide for its durability and fine grain. Its excellent finishing qualities make it a popular choice for high-traffic flooring, furniture, and cabinetry.
The sapwood is typically creamy white, occasionally with a reddish-brown hue, while the heartwood ranges from light to dark reddish brown. The wood has a close, fine texture, and is usually straight-grained, with occasional figure patterns like curly, fiddleback, or bird’s eye. It darkens slightly with time and exposure to light.
Hard maple machines, turns, and finishes beautifully. It glues, planes, and drills well but may require care when nailing or screwing. It is easy to sand and can be polished to a fine, smooth finish.
